Winter Scenes

I am not a winter sports enthusiast. I am much more of a winter couch enthusiast. But when the sun is shining and the sky turns cerulean blue, I feel a need to go outdoors.

So today I grabbed a warm hat and my camera and headed to one of my favorite nearby spots where the sky meets the lake and the scenes are always picturesque, no matter the season: Chautauqua Institution. I walked a little, drove a little, and snapped photos along the way. I made a loop through the south gate and past Thunder Bridge, drove along the lake to the Miller Bell Tower, and climbed the hill to Bestor Plaza.

There were snowmobiles skidding along the frozen and snow-covered lake, ice fishing huts dotting the wide open landscape, and a few people traversing the grounds on cross country skis. But just walking with my camera is my kind of winter sport.

This is the last day of February; a month that has shattered records for cold temperatures. On top of that, we have had days of continual snowfall; not extraordinary amounts this month, just enough to make it feel like the shoveling would never end.

Today was a pleasant break. Tomorrow we face yet another winter storm watch as February drifts into March.

Now back to my regularly scheduled blanket and book, with some hot chocolate thrown in for good measure.
